Campus News Four Teachers Receive Delphi's Highest Certification
Three of Delphi Academy of Florida's most tenured teachers have been awarded Delphi Educator status by Delphi Schools Incorporated (DSI). Delphi Educator status is the highest teacher certification an educator can receive from DSI, the senior administrative organization which oversees the Delphi Schools Network, an association of private schools around the country. To be considered for Delphi Educator status teachers must complete a comprehensive training, apprenticing and evaluation program that culminates in professional certification by DSI. The three faculty members that received this recognition were Carol Kirtley, Dean of Academics, Trish O'Hara, Head of Standards and Mary Float, Assistant to the Dean for Elementary and Middle Schools. These three veteran teachers have over fifty years of combined experience educating the children of Clearwater on the Delphi Program. On receiving her certificate, Ms. Kirtley stated, "I am honored to have earned this recognition. For my entire professional career I wanted to be a teacher of the highest order. As a Delphi Educator I have achieved that goal." The Delphi Faculty Development Program trains faculty in both the administrative and classroom technology of the Delphi Program, an educational program with a rich curriculum, over thirty years of experience and the breakthrough educational methodologies of American author and educator L. Ron Hubbard. Delphi Educator certification requires of the teacher hundreds of hours training on more than forty individual administrative and technical courses, including the very comprehensive Applied Scholastics Educator's Course and Apprenticeship; a number of curriculum-specific apprenticeships; a series of proficiency reviews and a final quality check and certification from senior management. News from the Practical Department Once again we have expanded and created upon our practical delivery to the whole student body. First off we continue to train our students to compete against other local private schools in such sports as soccer, girls volleyball, boys basketball, girls basketball, softball and football. And of course let's not forget about our cheerleaders that cheer the team on.
Secondly, our Music Department is full of future musicians. They are learning such things as music theory, how to play the recorder, guitar, violin and piano. In addition, our Elementary/Middle School choir performed at several events recently, including Winter Wonderland and our Delphi's Annual Holiday Show. The choir members are learning how to control their voices and singing muscles and sing a repertoire of hymnal, jazz and folk songs. Thirdly, a wide media of art allows the children to really create what they want while being overseen by our very own artist, Marta Dalloul, who has taught art here for the past ten years. Everything from drawing to cartooning to painting with acrylics, pastels and watercolors in addition to making silk screen paintings, stained glass, jewelry making, crocheting, pottery and more. Each year there is a Christmas card competition. Any students that would like to participate make their cards and submit them to be chosen as our annual Christmas card, which is sent out to over a thousand people. The winning student receives a beautiful art kit. This year Ashley Vaughan won that prize! There are also other classes the students can choose in addition to the above, such as animation, creative writing, script writing and cooking. The students are also working on publishing their first school newspaper. Delphi Students Tutor Local Children Recently we have kicked off our Kids for Kids tutoring program. Two of our Delphi parents, Avia Ezra and Rosy Kugler, head the team of Delphi Middle School students that are now tutoring local children two days a week on our school campus. Our students like to give back to the community, and that is one of many values they are taught on the Delphi program. If you know of any local children that are in need of after school tutoring help, please give us a call so we can help them. Well we did it again... Once again Delphi Academy was notified that, for the seventh year in a row, we were named the Best Private School, Summer Camp and Preschool Program by the readers of the Tampa Family Living Magazine! COMMUNITY TUTORING AT DELPHI
Delphi has partnered with Reverend Norman Pearson and the New Growth Education Center in bringing free tutoring to the community. Every Saturday morning a group of teachers from Reverend Pearson's group, all newly trained in the Study Technology of L. Ron Hubbard and the Applied Scholastics reading and phonics program, tutors a handful of young children from the community here at Delphi. Soon this program will expand to more students from the community getting tutored on weekdays by our Middle School students and parents from the Delphi Parent Organization. We need more volunteer parents for this program. If you are interested in helping, please see Rosy or Colin to get involved.
This month the entire school was wowed by a fabulous musical performance. We were lucky enough to have the fourteen member Mixed Company of Yale, a cappella jazz choir from Yale University, perform for our entire student body. They put on a 40-minute show packed with a variety of bouncy numbers from the popular "Walking in Memphis" to the silly "McDonald's Girl". They were great. Every student loved it. This will only lead to more inspiration for our budding singers throughout the school.
Delphi Academy of Florida Wins City of Clearwater Business Beautification Award The City of Clearwater and the Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce have commended Delphi Academy of Florida for the maintenance and improvements of its beautiful campus and have acknowledged Delphi as the Business Beautification Recognition Award winner for fall 2007. For these efforts the mayor of the Clearwater, Mr. Frank Hibbard, has awarded a plaque of recognition and certificate to the Headmaster of Delphi Academy of Florida, Colin Taufer, for the school's contribution towards making Clearwater a great place to live, work and play. Located in the heart of Clearwater on over two acres of land, Delphi Academy has made great efforts to create a school campus that the entire community--students, parents, teachers and neighbors--can be proud of. The Delphi campus stands apart in its neighborhood, fusing contemporary and traditional school buildings into a seamless campus, while balancing plenty of manicured greenery and modern play areas for students. The interior of the school is equally beautiful, with aesthetically equipped classrooms (including a science lab, art room and music room) all alive with color and modern furnishings; an all-service kitchen; a full-court gymnasium; and a breathtaking library complete with internet access, performance stage and young children's reading area. The Business Beautification Recognition Award program exists to honor the uniqueness of Clearwater businesses and to encourage the business community to maintain or make improvements to their property while providing the surrounding community with a positive sense of place. |
